The morning had started rather gloomily and as the weather forecast was not encouraging indoor activities were being planned. However, to my delight, the weather improved considerably and I decided to explore Gruinard Bay in a hunt for panoramic type views. I had been making some panoramas recently as a new departure for my photography and knew that Gruinard Bay offered some spectacularly wide views of the North-west Highlands. Apart from the rugged hills around the bay this image also shows An Teallach, Beinn Ghobhlach and Coigach. Also shown to the right is a fine example of a raised beach. This is due to postglacial rebound. The land, pushed down by the massive weight of ice sheets during the last ice age, rises again when the ice retreats. In this area the upward rise of the land is exceeding the sea-level rise caused by the ice sheets melting. During the last 11,000 years, Gruinard Bay has been rising relative to sea level at about 2 in (5 cm) per century.
