These are the remains of the village on St Kilda that was eventually abandoned by the people in the 1930s. Now owned by the National Trust for Scotland it became one of Scotland's six World Heritage Sites in 1986 and is one of the few in the world to hold mixed status for both its natural and cultural qualities. Isolated from the nearest Scottish mainland by forty miles of the Atlantic, in an oceanic climate, frequently severe, and surviving solely on the hard won agricultural and animal produce of this small island, it is not difficult to admire the durability and tenacity of the St Kildans.
