One of the joys of living in Scotland's North West Highlands is the drive that is necessary in order to access town services such as are available in Inverness or Dingwall. In my case that was almost two hours and there were two entirely different routes I could take. Either route took me through the most spectacular scenery of iconic mountains, lochs, coastal scenes fringed with beautiful beaches, many waterfalls, rivers and not least glimpses of Scotland's wildlife, red deer, stags, wild goats, otters, sea eagles, buzzards, etc. I never tired of it. This image of Loch Droma, with the magnificent An Teallach in the far distance, was captured on my drive home in the late afternoon on a very still autumnal day. I had to stop! I nearly always had my camera with me just in case I was fortunate enough to encounter good light enhancing Scotland's wonderful scenery.
However, it is not always calm and idyllic like this, particularly in the winter when the mountain roads are difficult to drive safely on, or not at all, with the risk of getting stuck. On such days, if I had to drive, I would choose the route that didn't go quite as high as the other to avoid the risk of encountering closed snow gates, then hope for the best. On one occasion the two hour drive became five hours as I slithered slowly along in the dark wondering if I would ever get home! But I did!
