Read MorePhoto 3340: Iceberg on Lago Argentina
My wife and I were travelling to a remote location for a few days trekking in Patagonia and to get there we had to travel from El Calafate by boat. En route our boat travelled to an offshoot of Lago Argentina where the Upsalla glacier calves icebergs. We encountered a few but this huge iceberg had an extraordinary shape. The opening in it was big enough for our ship to pass through, but the skipper didn't take us through, perhaps fearful that invisble ice under the water would damage the boat. However, we lingered here long enough to take a good number of photographs of it, and this one shows it set off against the Andes. If you think the blue in the ice is unreal, think again. The colour in these icebergs is extraordinary. We were given a long scientific explanation at the time (2nd Jan 2018) for the cause of the blueness but the reasons have now faded in my memory. I'm sure the explanation can be googled!
